In the name of beer artistry, your vote is needed!

M&HD friend Stacey George has been slaving away to combine two passions of equal importance - quality art and quality beer.  Her current endeavor is the creation of label artwork for Clown Shoes Brewery, a tasty and now well-labeled local brewery.  Make no mistake - due to her efforts, the world is now happier, hoppier place.

Take a look at her work and process here

And be sure to take a second and vote for her in the poll on the top-right!

Epic Over Eating...

You know that feeling you got when you watched Super Size Me and you thought to yourself "I may eat badly, but at least it's not THAT bad!"? Well this takes over eating and spins it right back into a win.

I actually can't pick just one of his videos, so here are a couple of my favorites.

For those of you with a sweet tooth:

For the Meat Lover:

For the vegetarian:
...I'm just kidding. Vegetables will never be epic.

I'm Bing 'effin Crosby

Props to M&HD buddy Rob for sending these along, as this spoof on an obscure Christmas classic is pretty great.

Here's the original Bing Crosby / David Bowie bit:

And here's the Will Ferrell / John C. Reilly remake.  Definitely worth watching the end of this one:

Play it safe for the Holidays...

I'm been telling people for years that just because it's the Holidays, doesn't mean you should let your guard done. Thanks to the ladies of Team Unicorn, here are some quick tips on remaining diligent.

Happy Holidays! And check your loved ones for bite marks!!

I found my thrill in Mother Russia...

It's hard to decide which is the best part: Putin's mad right hand melody skills on the piano, or the fact that he's singing a song about sex (No, I got the innuendo Fats. We all got it.) at a children's charity function.

Recently discovered Twilight inspiration? Nope - US Navy PSM for syphilis

This "unearthed" video is a little long, but this quote from the Wired.com author summarizes it well:

"...the Navy once saw fit to describe the hazards of syphilis to young sailors using the menacing bite of Count Spirochete (gross), an undead, ever-predatory monster representing one of the more potent venereal diseases. (Or so we remember from health class.) At excruciating length, the count takes viewers on a multi-continent tour of the history of syphilis, all in an edu-taining cartoon. That’s right: In the 1970s, the Navy produced the VD version of Schoolhouse Rock."

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/12/navy-syphilis/

Actual line: "Ah, my old friend gonorrhea..."

2010 Movie Mash up!

Usually I am not a fan of mash up's, but this one is done extremely well, especially since it includes 270 movies. All from 2010.

Check out this link to view all of the movies in order of appearance:

Apparently, it's NOT acting...

Either Nic Cage is SUPER METHOD or he is not actually trying very hard in those movies of his...

Cage got into a screaming fight with a friend on a street in Romania, and thanks to a wonderful passerby with a cell phone camera, we get to witness it! Unfortunately, the video is pretty dark and difficult to understand, and the captions appear to be in Romanian. However, it's fun to watch as Nic yells something about being a f***ing retard, thinking they were brothers, and finally declares, "I will DIE in the name of honor!"

All that's missing is an explosion and maybe John Travolta.

Help me Obi-Wan, you're the only way to Rawk...

Yet another astounding trend in Japan.

Crowds flocking to a sold out tour featuring a popular artist sounds pretty normal. What is not normally is that the artist is a 10 foot tall animated hologram. I watched the video for the "headliner" (WTF?), but to actually see how the hologram actually works, I thought this was a better video.

If you pause at 1:02, you can clearly see the glass wall where she's being projected with the live band in the background. Why are they in the back, cause SCREW those guys for being humans, am I right?

I'll give her and her engineers credit for the sweet dance moves, but when I envisioned a world with life-like holograms, it just wasn't this. I'm still waiting for the Jaws 19 poster to leap out and take a bite.

Do what comes naturally, I suppose...

A little post-thanksgiving treat for everyone...

Arsenic and New Lace...

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I've been waiting for this announcement since I was a kid. A new life form has been discovered...on Earth.

You can read the gizmodo article here, but basically this has completely blown all of our theories on finding a new sustainable planet or new life forms, out of the water. (Eeerr...solar system?)

NASA will be holding a press conference at 2pm today to discuss exactly what means. Feel free to tune into the live streaming broadcast here as well.

Yeah guys! We did it!

Equating Voice Volume with Acting...

We all love to make fun of him. We all secretly hope a conversation will turn just so we can shout "How'd it get burned!? How'd it get burned!?". In this one video, they've managed to truly capture the essence of Nicolas Cage's full on crazy.

To see the film list go see our friends at Pajiba here.

Do I need to say it's not safe for work? You'd all know that right?

Thanks to Stacey for finding this one and thanks, of course, to Nic. Send my love to Kal-el.

troopers wondering if the driver was drunk...reallllly?

Possibly inspired by the lovely Antoine Dodson news story, here is yet another interesting individual that had a certain attention-grabbing flare. I think it may have been the slow blink/wink that occurs in the middle of her detailed story as to what happened. Luckily no one was hurt...

The Rise and Fall (and Animation) of Mel Gibson

An animated news segment from a Taiwanese network that perfectly portrays the times and troubles of Braveheart. I can't decide on my favorite part, but I am a little disappointed that NMA network, like so many others, has completely left out any mention of that perennial classic, "What Women Want."

The Simplest Ideas Make the Biggest Impact

As a stark contrast to my latest post (albeit one of maybe two I've actually posted) which haunted my dreams of tightly clad women performing aerobics in a green screen forest, here's something that actually inspired me to no end.

The simplest ideas can, in fact, make the biggest impact. Good on these 4 girls from Harvard. This product is amazingly simple and unreal:

Accurate yet misleading...

Came across a wonderfully funny blog post by Mr. John Scalzi talking about movie descriptions that are technically correct, but completely miss the real meaning of the story.

Since yesterday, I've spent the better part of my day trying to come up with my own examples. So far these are my favorite:
Annie:
Young girl cons millionaire into taking her in. All of New York grinds to a halt as she hoodwinks him into searching for her make-believe parents.

Braveheart:
After witnessing the brutal murder of his father, a man with manic-depressive tendencies entices a riot to claim the crown.

Eau de Parfum: Fat Electrician

A product derived directly from the Noah Puckerman school of reverse hottie-psychology, "Fat Electrician" snares the fairer sex with the enticing aromas of ass sweat and burnt fuseboxes.

This is your next logical step if your stock of "Svelte Refrigerator Repairman" and "Unremarkable Plumber" have proven ineffective.

Also, it's guaranteed to work 60% of the time, every time.

Reblog from Frog Design - When Ideas Have Sex

Listen Alan, we need to talk...

We have similar last names and even I think this was an awful choice.

One would think that since he laughs at the end of the commercial that this was all just a joke and "Oh Alan, you are hilarious!!" but no. Sephora exclusively carried the line in stores until 2005 and after which he sold "Cumming" on his own website through 2009 when hackers forced him to take the whole site down.

Now let's explore the scent itself:
"It's notes include bergamot, black pepper, scotch pine, whiskey, cigar, heather, douglas fir, rubber, leather, highland mud, burnt rubber, peat fire, white truffle."

Cigars and burnt rubber??!! Seriously, you've got to be f*cking with me!!

Some amazlingly hyperrealistic artwork

Flip though this gallery:
http://www.gregorythielker.com/underimages/untilnow.html

The artist, Gregory Thielker's words:

"I use water on the windshield to create a shifting lens for the way we see the environment: it both highlights and obscures our viewing. Perspectives slip and compress, while shapes and colors merge into one another. I also work with relationships between surface and depth, between flatness and illusion. These images are born out of real experience and have a close relationship with the medium of painting: its fluidity, transparency, and capacity for layering, mixing, and blending."

“My most recent paintings and drawings explore the sensation of seeing from a car while driving through the rain. I am fascinated with the constantly changing, yet particular landscapes seen from the car and also the way that the water on the windshield interacts with that landscape.”

A remarkably informative interview

My guess is that this is going to be one fantastic re-imaging.

A bitchin' animated short - created with open-source software

I'm a sucker for animated shorts, and Sintel (by Dutch studio The Blender Foundation) is pretty a awesome CGI story on its own.  But it gets even better when you learn that it was created using the company's free, open-source software.  Pretty sweet that it's possible to create something this polished using readily-available tools like that.

(Also - Scales!  NOOOO!)

When the Zombocalypse happens, I'm finding this kid.

He honors his family by showing no fear in the face of the undead. Well done. The girl gets half credit.

Credit to Jax's sister for finding this one.

Into the Wind

I've mentioned the quality of ESPN's documentary series "30 for 30" before, and tonight's premier of "Into the Wind" (at 8:00pm, EST) looks to be similarly impressive. Take a look at the story and preview here:

http://30for30.espn.com/film/into-the-wind.html

Looks to be pretty affecting television (I'm totally not going to need to pick up some tissues on the way home, or anything).  Bill Simmons, who produced the series, just tweeted that this is one of his favorites.  So I'm guessing it'll stack up with my own favs, "The Band that Wouldn't Die" and "The Two Escobars".  And again, I'm eagerly awaiting "Four Days in October" on October 5th.

But honestly, most of these things have been pretty great.  Should be worth checking out tonight.

Pushing the internet to even greater heights

I'm an admitted fan of mash-ups. And while in many cases the end result of combining two turds is simply a larger, grosser turd, sometimes rearranging things in unexpected ways can make magic.

Take Tube Dubber, for instance.  A mash-up tool that amazingly takes YouTube to an even stranger place.  It allows you to combine the video track of any YouTube clip with the audio track of another.

How is this helpful, you might ask?  Well, I mentioned magic earlier.  What happens if I combine a popular movie about magic with the preeminent song about magic?  Even more magic, right?  The answer: some surprisingly badass yet expectedly stupid teen wizards.  So yes – it’s more magical.

I’ve also discovered that Tube Dubber is capable of cranking the crazy level of YouTube upwards, past 11, and screaming into to the lower stratosphere.  By combining two elements commonly accepted as nuts – Japanese games shows and William Shatner – I created something so insane that it appears almost normal.  It may in fact have gone full circle through our plane of reality, rendering its components sane while leaving us mentally shattered.

The possibilities are endless.  I can combine two things at random – say, two suave dudes like Don Draper and Bruce Campbell – and create something even more suaver than the sum of its parts.  Or I can take an awesome movie trailer – like “9” – and use it to enhance another movie that needs some help being more awesome.   This thing is literally an “awesome enhancer”.

Again, most times crap + crap = more crap.  But sometimes there is beauty in the juxtaposition of random things.  A whimsy in the gestalt.

Or, we could all just be going batshit insane

Important Language Classes

We start with the basics: Hello, Goodbye, Do you know where the bathroom is? Wow, your dancing is fucking sick you son of a bitch. The staples of a foreign language, really.

Self deprecating, yet catchy!

There are two things you should be aware of:
1. Nick Horby has an amazing voice and he should do greeting cards. Possibly voicemail messages.
2. Stick through to the end, it's not all plugging the new album. Gun noises are abundant.

Hey, have you seen that online interactive film… music video… interactive piece… thing?

Google launched a pretty neato “HTML 5 experience” today in the form of “The Wilderness Downtown”. It’s essentially an interactive music video that uses your childhood neighborhood as the setting. Provided it’s on Google Street View, that is. (If it’s not, definitely plug in an address that is to see the full effect.)

But it’s also a pretty sweet way to show off what HTML 5 can do. Which, in this case, is a story spread through multiple viewing windows, all centrally timed to open and close at specific moments that correspond to the soundtrack, and are populated with user-generated content. Pretty cool.

They might not show videos on MTV anymore, but if you can interact with them on this level that might be for the best. Turns out the internet may be a better vehicle anyway.

Notorious M.A.P.

The internet is a modern miracle simply for it's inherent ability to easily mash-up the seemingly unmashable.

For instance, just the other day I was wishing there were a simple resource that compiled locations from rap lyrics and then plotted then in an easy-to-navigate map so that I might actually visit, say, the club where Jay-Z stabbed that record exec. And it would preferably do it with Google Maps, as that's on double-true record as "the best".

Lo' and behold, the internet provides.

Aerobics Class with Dame Edna

Okay well - I've been waiting to contribute something special for my first foray into the Social Scene of Martinis and Hot Dogs. I need to say - I'm not entirely sure if this is it, but sweet mother of god....

It's amazingly horrific. It's more like a hybrid Narnia aerobics class let by that she/man Dame Edna. Who in hell is Dame Edna anyway and why do I know that name? I digress.

Another list I aspire to make...

One of the best things about Facebook is finding cool stuff from people who are your friends but who are not friends with all your other friends. This makes it easy to then pass links, websites, videos, photos etc off as your own discoveries, thereby making yourself look AWESOME, like an awesome finder of awesome things online who is just altogether awesome.

On that note, and with no credit to the fine fellow who actually introduced me to this site, I bring you:

Gives Me Hope for Movie Making

Before we get to the video, let me quickly explain the website:

hitRECord.org, founded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is a place where artists all over the world can submit their own music, narration, animation, or what have you for the general use of all hitRECord members. Subsequently, anything uploaded can be grabbed by another person to be recut into something new or members can get together to create a project like the video below. Gordon-Levitt will then take something that he feels is a great piece of work and distribute it.

After that, any profits made from the film only half of goes back into the keeping up the site and the other half is distributed amoung the collaborators. You can check out some forums there to see how money distribution is posted and discussed for fairness.

Cool, huh? No studios, no bullsh*t. Just fun and original film making.

Morgan M Morgansen's Date with Destiny was shown at the 2010 Sundance Festival and was one of first collaborations to come out of hitREcord.org.

Like magic bacon

One advantage of being a vegetarian for so long is that when you tear into something like this you can really taste the sparkles.

From the product page: "As the unicorn ages, its meat becomes fatty and marbled and the living bone in the horn loses density in a process much like osteoporosis. The horn's outer layer of keratin begins to develop a flavor very similar to candied almonds. Blending the crushed unicorn horn into the meat adds delightful, crispy flavor notes in each bite."
